We’ve had a few questions recently about modern High Heat Retention (HHR) storage heaters — especially from people who had the older, traditional models. So here’s a quick myth-buster!
“My heater doesn’t feel hot… is it working?”
With older storage heaters, the outside casing often felt very warm all day. That’s because they released their heat quickly, whether you needed it or not.
Modern HHR storage heaters work very differently.
They’re designed to hold onto the heat and release it slowly and efficiently, only when your room needs it. Because of this controlled release — and their built-in thermostats — the outer casing often feels warm at most, not hot. This is perfectly normal and actually a sign they’re doing their job properly.
If your HHR heater doesn’t feel hot, here are a few things to check:
-
✔️ Is your off-peak electricity period active? They charge overnight, so they won’t feel warm until after that.
-
✔️ Is the thermostat set correctly? If the room is already at the temperature you’ve chosen, the heater won’t release extra heat.
-
✔️ Are the room vents open? Some models have adjustable vents or boost settings.
-
✔️ Is there plenty of clearance around the heater? Obstructions can affect heat flow.
-
✔️ Has the weather been mild? In milder conditions, they release less heat.
Remember:
Not feeling “hot” ≠ not working.
Modern HHR heaters are designed to feel cooler on the outside because they’re far more efficient and better at controlling heat throughout the day.
