Getting Quotes from Installers: What You Need to Know Before You Say Yes

When planning home improvements – whether it’s insulation, a heat pump, solar panels or another retrofit measure – choosing the right contractor or installer is a critical step. But with so many details to consider, it can feel overwhelming.

At Greener Homes in Lancashire, we know it’s not always easy to compare quotes or know what to ask. That’s why we’re here to help you navigate the process. Below are some key things to consider when requesting a quote, and how you can protect yourself along the way.

Asking the Right Questions

Is the Installer Properly Insured?

Before any work begins, ask to see proof of the installer’s insurance. You want to know they’re covered in case something goes wrong.

And don’t forget to contact your own home insurer too, just to be sure the work won’t affect your cover. This is often free or only a small charge, but it can save big headaches later.

What Should Be in the Quote?

The more detail, the better. A good quote should clearly show:

  • The exact work being done
  • Materials or specific brands being used
  • Whether the price is fixed or could change

This makes comparing quotes much easier and avoids surprises later.

How Will I Pay and Is My Money Safe?

Ask if the installer accepts credit card payments (which can offer added protection). If they ask for a deposit or upfront payment, find out:

  • How much?
  • Is it protected in any way?
  • What happens if the job is delayed or cancelled?

Never be afraid to ask, any good contractor will be happy to explain.

Who Provides What?

It’s the little things that can catch you out. Ask whether the installer will provide:

  • Tools and hired equipment
  • Skips for waste
  • Scaffolding

Knowing who’s responsible helps avoid confusion and unexpected costs.

When Will the Work Start and How Long Will It Take?

Check:

  • The planned start and finish dates
  • What happens if the work overruns
  • Whether you’ll be kept in the loop during the job – What happens if extra work is needed?

Are They Qualified and Can I Trust Them?

Choosing someone trustworthy to work on your home is a big deal. You can find reliable, certified installers yourself through government-backed schemes like:

  • TrustMarkThe only UK government-endorsed quality scheme for tradespeople working on home improvements, energy efficiency, and repairs. TrustMark registered businesses must meet high standards and follow a code of conduct that protects you as the homeowner.
  • MCS (Microgeneration Certification Scheme)If you’re installing renewable systems such as heat pumps or solar panels, MCS certification is essential. Using an MCS installer is usually a requirement if you want to apply for funding or incentive schemes like the Boiler Upgrade Scheme.
  • Lancashire Safe Trader Scheme – Run by Lancashire County Council, this local scheme helps you find honest, reliable tradespeople who have committed to treating customers fairly. It covers general home maintenance and improvements too.

Both directories allow you to search by postcode and see installers working in your area.

We also suggest:

  • Asking for local references if possible
  • Requesting examples of recent work, especially if similar to the improvements you’re considering

These steps can help you feel more confident that the work will be carried out to a good standard.

Should I Just Go for the Cheapest Quote?

Not necessarily. The cheapest quote might leave out important details, use lower-quality materials, or come from someone with less experience. It’s about getting the best value, not just the lowest price.

That’s why we recommend getting at least two or three quotes from different installers. This gives you a better sense of what a fair price looks like, and lets you compare how each installer plans to approach the job. It also gives you the chance to see who communicates clearly, answers your questions confidently, and makes you feel comfortable.

Take your time, ask questions, and trust your instincts. You’re making a big decision and you deserve to feel confident in it.
